ECOWAS supports Okonjo-Iweala for WTO work
THE Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has embraced the candidature of Nigeria's previous Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, for World Trade Organization's (WTO's) top employment.
The provincial body said no African has taken on the situation of the association's executive general since it was made on January 1, 1995.
An announcement by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the choice had the gift of its most elevated body, the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of States and Government.
It peruses: "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to advise that the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government have supported the candidature of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for the situation of Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), for the period 2012-2025.
"The summit body noticed that since the making of the WTO on January 1, 1995, which is a replacement to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) set up on January 1, 1948, no African has taken on the situation of Director-General of the association.
"The ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government supported the competitor of Nigeria, taking note of: 'Her long periods of administrative involvement with the top echelons of multilateral foundations, her set up notoriety as a courageous reformer, her phenomenal arranging and political abilities, her experience of more than 30 years as a Development Economist with a long standing enthusiasm for exchange, her magnificent scholastic capabilities, her situations as Managing Director World Bank, and as of now as Board Chair GAVI, and AU Special Envoy to Mobilize Financial Resources for the battle against COVID-19.'
"The body approached other African nations just as non-African nations to support her candidature."
