WWDC 2020: Apple announces transition to Apple silicon
Apple today announced that they will be transitioning to a new chipset that will be powering its future Mac computers. The new chipset (Apple silicon) will significantly improve the performance of the company’s Mac computers. It will also make it easier for developers to cutomise their products for the entire ecosystem.
The company says that the Apple silicon will consist of a family of SoCs for the Mac. This will enable the company's Mac computers to deliver a better performance per watt along with higher GPU performance GPUs. This in turn will enable app developers to write even more powerful pro apps and high-end games.
“With its powerful features and industry-leading performance, Apple silicon will make the Mac stronger and more capable than ever. I’ve never been more excited about the future of the Mac,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement.
The newly announced chipset will ensure that all of Apple’s devices have a common architecture, which makes it easy for developers to design apps that are customised as per the company's entire ecosystem.
Transition to Apple silicon will be fostered by macOS Big Sur. Apple says that using ‘Universal 2 application binaries, developers will be able to easily create a single app that taps into the native power and performance of the new Macs with Apple silicon, while still supporting Intel-based Macs.’
Developers will also be able to make their iOS and iPadOS apps available on the Mac without any modifications.

Apple will start shipping Apple silicon-based Mac later this year and the company says that the transition from Intel to the new chipset will take about two years to complete. In the meantime, the company will continue to provide support for Intel-based Macs. Apple also announced that it has new Intel-based Macs in development.
