I was going to Manchester United’ – Shearer reveals how close he came to Old Trafford move
Britain legend Alan Shearer has uncovered exactly that he was so near joining Manchester United over Newcastle in 1996.
In spite of the fact that the striker in the long run plumped for his old neighborhood club, just the constancy of then supervisor Kevin Keegan to seek after a world-record £15 million ($18m) bargain kept him from doing a change to Old Trafford.
It was no mystery that Shearer was needed by the Red Devils, yet he has now lifted the top on how close he came to getting paperwork done for the club and the reaction of Sir Alex Ferguson when he didn't.
"I plunked down with Kevin Keegan and Sir Alex around the same time," he disclosed to the BBC. "I saw Keegan toward the beginning of the day and talks had gone incredibly well.
"At that point the Man Utd unexpected came in. His first inquiry to me was: 'Am I seeing you first or am I seeing you second?' I disclosed to him I had seen Kevin toward the beginning of the day and I won't reveal to you his words. He said fundamentally I have zero chance, at that point. He needed to see me first.
"Be that as it may, I suspected the discussions went very well. I was intrigued with what he needed to state.
"I needed to proceed to settle on a choice. At a certain point, I was going to Manchester United. In any case, at that point, I plunked down and I got a call from Kevin who requested to see me daily or two later. What's more, I thought: 'You recognize what, I will return to Newcastle. It was the club I constantly upheld and needed to play for.
"I thought: 'I must ring him. I rang him yet there was no answer. I figured I was unable to leave a message. I rang him again yet there was still no answer. I left him a message after the third time and nothing unexpected, I never recovered a call!
"I have no second thoughts, I'd do the equivalent once more."
