Apple iPhone 12: 3 reasons why we are excited, 2 reasons why we are not
Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 12 in September this year. Some reports mention that the launch might be delayed by a couple of months but since we don’t have a sure confirmation, we are just going to assume it is launching as scheduled in September.
The iPhone 12 launch is one of the most awaited launches of the year and while we are obviously excited, we have heard certain reports that are disappointing as well. For starters let’s talk about why we are excited.
- One iPhone 12 model is going to be cheaper than the iPhone SE that Apple just launched
The LTE version of the iPhone 12 is pegged to cost $549. That’s like ₹42,000. If these tipsters are right, this could make the LTE version of the iPhone 12 the cheapest new iPhone in the market. Cheaper still than the iPhone SE that Apple launched recently. The iPhone SE (64 GB) costs ₹42,500. The iPhone 12 will come with a new chipset and better cameras as well - so this a killer deal.
- LiDAR on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max
Apple introduced LiDAR tech on its new iPads this and will be bringing it to the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. LiDAR is basically ‘Light Detection and Ranging’ that paves the way for better augmented reality experiences on your device. Equipped with LiDAR tech, the new iPhones will be able to handle AR-based games and apps better. While not many apps use AR, but developers might be working on features given that the iPad already has it and the new iPhone will get it.
- 120Hz refresh rate
Apple may finally give its iPhones a 120Hz refresh rate though recent rumours have said that it might be restricted to a 60Hz for the lower models for the iPhone 12. We take all rumours with the pinch of salt so this remains to be seen. A higher refresh rate means smoother scrolling on the smartphone - in case you were not clear about what it means for you. Most of the Android smartphones launched lately come with a 90Hz or a 120Hz.
And now, things we are not too pleased about
- No power adaptor in the box
If your first reaction is - you gotta be kidding me - you are not alone. Rumour has it that Apple is not going to ship its power adaptor with the iPhone 12 (any model). First time iPhone buyers will be forced to buy the power adaptor separately. Apple’s basic 5W power adapter is available in the US for $19 and the 18W charger costs $29.
- No EarPods either
Apple always ships its connected EarPods with each smartphone but they might change it this year with the iPhone 12. The EarPods will not be included as a part of the box and Apple users will either have to be happy using their older EarPods, or AirPods if they have them. Or they can also use other headphones or earbuds. Given that most Android smartphones ship with headphones, this is disappointing. And we also don’t know why Apple might do this.
Almost all of these reasons are based on tips and rumours so some of them might eventually be proved wrong. We're going to just wait till September to find out.
